    What speeds are folks using in the pattern (downwind, base, final until runway made)? For takeoff I've been rotating at 50kts, gear up, climb at 70kts. Downwind 70kts, gear down, 65kts on base, 62 kts short final.

    Is everyone doing power idle landings, or carrying power and using soft field technique for every landing. For regular airplanes I was taught power off and you're slowly trying to prevent the airplane from landing with back pressure and it'll land when it's ready. For the Super Petrel and LSAs in general I've heard power in for landing helps with sink rate and directional control since squirrelliness increases at low speeds.

    I posted my response to a previous question about landing at the field and water. Keep it simple. On downwind set the power to about 4,200 RPM. Plane will slow below 70 ktsand around 65kts, lower the landing gear and the airspeed will stabilize right around 60kts. This is dependent on weight, but a good ballpark area. abeam intended point of landing and after completing a landing checklist. Reduce power 1,000 RPM or in this example to 3,200 RPM. Fly the pattern at 60kts and this power setting will give you between 400-500 FPM rate of decent, downwind, base and final. Take a peek the the 90 on base and if high reduce a little and if low add a bit of power until approaching the proper glide slope and add/reduce power from your previous correction while maintaining 60kts throughout. Get centerline taken care of early and try not to mess with the nose using power to correct your rate of decent. Field and water pattern should be flown at 60kts. you will find your landing more consistent. Airspeed between 55-65 is normal with small power corrections as you work towards 60 kts. In gusty winds I shoot for 60-65kts, but that leaves very little margin for overspending the landing gear.

      Do you normally carry power in for landings and take the power out after landing, like a soft field landing, or do you just power idle when runway is made and just round out and hold it off to land at minimal airspeed?

        I typically find I need to keep power in for landing on land, and find I need to go to idle on water to get the plane to come down and add power as needed to arrest rate of decent.
